Mancat Mentor Monday – The Importance of Being Snuggly

Monday, December 14, 2009

Welcome to my first lesson in how to be a mancat for my girlfriend Tama-Chan’s boy kittens. Today is not so much a lesson on how to snuggle, as from the looks of all the photos I have been seeing of them and their Mummy they have no problems snuggling, but rather why snuggling is so important.

Let’s look at the 3 main types of snuggling.

Misha-&-Pavlov
Cat-on-Cat Snuggles
This is me and my cousin Pavlov demonstrating this Snuggle. Cosmo won’t snuggle with me, but she’s missing out on something pretty special. Snuggling with a feline friend can keep you warm in winter and is also very comfy. As an added bonus, it makes humans go all gooey when they see this snuggle, which can result in scritches and treats.

When snuggling with a special ladycat it is impawtant to let her choose the snuggle spot and to let her have prime position (which may mean she uses you as a pillow).

Yuu-Chan
Human Snuggles
This is a snuggle that I practice at every opportunity. I don’t have any photos of me snuggling Mummy as it’s hard to take a photo when you’ve got your arms wrapped around each other, so I’ll have to leave it to the kittens’ Uncle Yuu-Chan to demonstrate.

Snuggling with a human is very rewarding as you can get bonus scritches and strokes while you are snuggling. It also makes the human fall in love with you even more, which means you’re more likely to get away with norty stuff.

It is also impawtant to share the snuggle love with other humans that visit, as they are likely to give you lots of attention and fawn all over you and tell you how handsome you are!

Interspecies Snuggling

This is not for the faint-hearted, but if you have a woofie in your household it is impawtant to try to initiate snuggling at the earliest opportunity. Aside from being very comfy to lie on, there is an ulterior motive for snuggling with a woofie. By staying on top, you’re telling the woofie that you’re the boss. Here is a very good example of how this can be best achieved (as demonstrated by Tails the cat and Shadow the Labraspoodle, furkids of Polly who is the Editor at Pet Mag).

Tails & ShadowUnder no circumstances should you let the woofie lie on you, for the simple reason that you will get squished.

About the only snuggling I do is with my mom and that’s only for a few minutes.

These are great lessons, Misha! Snuggling is a wonderful thing (and you’re right about it making humans love you more… I should know!). ;)

Hmm, maybe I need to fly over and give Tama-Chan some lessons in the cuddles face to face…

Seasons Greetings Misha
I don’t mind Tails using me as a shaggy carpet, especially as it’s the season to be jolly!
Peace and goodwill to all creatures great and small.

Oh this is great info Misha! You are going to be a great influence on Tama-Chan’s babies. Since there are no older male kitties at her home (what with Yuu-Chan being just a baby himself still) I think it is great that you are stepping up to the plate to help out!

Uh-oh… I’m a failure at snuggling! I’m what’s known as “squirmy.” And we three cats barely ever lean up against each other, much less snuggle. And as for snuggling the dog… I’m more likely to give her a good slap!

You have great advice, and I am definitely a remedial student!

We snuggle with our Mom all the time, we snuggle with each other a little (‘cept me & Austin – we don’t interact at all!). And… Well, snuggling with the puppy that lives here is just NOT going to happen – she’s too hyper! Good lessons for the kittens to learn, though!

That is a good lesson. We snuggle with each other and our Beans.

This is a great first lesson Misha. We hope those kittens pay particular attention to the part where you say “under no circumstances should you let the woofie lie on you”.

oh oh! last night mom and dad were laying next to each other on the couch. Hansel then laid on dad and mom, and then benny laid on mom and snuggled up to hansel and used hansel as a head rest. What kind of snuggling is that?

Very good advice Mischa! Although I never snuggled with Ruckus when she lived here and I snuggle a lot with my Daddy but only a very little bit with my Mom and I have not snuggled with Sushi since I was just a little kitteh … OK Mom says I should start taking your advice even though I am not a mancat.

This is a great lesson, especially since you go into all three types of snuggling so well. I can only snuggle with my humans, though my bro Rusty and I used to do parallel sleeping on a joint blanket, but never actual snuggling. We must not have had good teaching like you are trying to give to the kittens.

What a great lesson. I only get to snuggle with my mum, cause there are no other furries in our house.

We’ve never snuggled with our woofies. That might be fun!

I don’t know… if I indulge in that sort of behaviour someone might try and touch my belleh. That is Not Allowed.

Fabulous pictures and great advice, my Misha! I really like that last shot. I have never tried to lie on Tommy. I generally prefer to spoon myself into his paws, but then again, he is not quite as shaggy as Shadow!

I am trying to teach the little ones well and am so grateful for the support!
